Boaventura de Sousa Santos

Boaventura de Sousa Santos is a researcher in fields such as the sociology of law, democracy, post-colonialism, globalization, social movements, human rights and interculturality.

He holds a PhD in Sociology of Law from Yale University (USA) and is a retired professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (Portugal). He is also a Distinguished Legal Scholar of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), a Global Legal Scholar of the University of Warwick (UK) and a Visiting Professor of Birkbeck College, University of London, as well as an Honorary Doctor of Law from several universities.

He is director emeritus of the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra and scientific coordinator of the Permanent Observatory of Portuguese Justice. He has directed the “ALICE” research project, funded by the European Research Council.
