Malian singer, dancer, actor, musician and style icon Fatoumata Diawara is one of the 21st century’s most exciting West African artists. Born in the Ivory Coast but with her roots in the Wassalou region of Mali, she combines traditional Malian instrumentation with the spirit and poise of classic 20th century jazz legends such as Nina Simone (who she has covered on stage). Fatoumata has released three albums – including 2015’s live recording At Home with Cuban pianist Roberto Fonsecca, which showcases her formidable abilities as a performer on stage.
