Is it possible to build a functioning society on a utopian model? In 1940, Leonard Howell inaugurated the Rastafari community of Pinnacle, Jamaica. A hill with a splendid view of the ocean, where the Rastafari people could finally live far from Babylon’s oppression. A utopia that became a tangible reality. A paradise on earth where they could live according to the principles of the Rastafari creed and be econonmically self-reliant. This would soon become the largest independent Rastafari community in history, but also the greatest example of an alternative society in colonial Jamaica. A revolutionary reality that would grow to the point of being seen as a threat to the social and economic balance of the nation. In this panel, we will take a walk through the golden years of Pinnacle and also recount other examples where a utopian vision of society became, thanks to Rastafari perseverance, a tangible reality.
