Reinforcing the festival’s recycling actions to move towards an emission-neutral future
The camp, with a capacity for 9,000 people, will have 27 new clean points to facilitate waste separation and contribute to its recycling

With the sustainability actions implemented we avoided the emission of 39 tons of CO2 in the last edition

From August 16 to 22, we will once again activate the environmental policy that has accompanied us since the beginning of the festival, 28 years ago. Sustainability is once again at the top of the agenda at Rototom Sunsplash, which, in its profile as the plastic free and the recently released Aenor certification of your carbon footprint validated to move towards a future without emissions, incorporates this summer a reinforcement in its recycling actions, especially in the camping area. The goal: to continue to save raw materials, energy and water, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2022, 39 tons ofCO2 were avoided through the festival’s green policy.

With capacity for 9,000 people, the Rototom Sunsplash campground will have 35 portable bins and 27 clean points, which will be installed on structures “much more visible and attractive to the public”. Each clean point will have containers for plastic, cardboard, glass and MSW, and will have explanatory serigraphy; with graphics and descriptions about its use in Spanish and English and a QR code for further information. A team of 20 people will raise awareness to promote the correct use of on-site waste separation, “because at the international level the same nomenclature is not always used. We are working on unifying the message, taking into account the diverse profile of our public, with more than 70 origins according to the latest pre-sales data. The challenge is to make recycling easier for them. Thus, through these informative actions and together with the cleaning staff, we will work to ensure that these spaces are always tidy.

The objective is to help reduce the “cross-contamination that we had detected in recent years in the campground”. Inside the Concert venue, after the complete elimination of plastic in 2019, the only waste generated is from the catering area and the biocompostable utensils (plates, cutlery, napkins) used there. Hence, recycling actions have focused on camping. However, our challenge as a festival for future editions is to recycle organic waste, also at the Concert venue.

According to Ecoembes estimatesAccording to the organization that coordinates recycling at Rototom, this year’s festival expects to collect around 10 tons of plastic containers, cans and bricks and 8 tons of paper and cardboard, which will then be transferred to an authorized private manager where the material will be sorted for recycling.

Our sustainable policy is cross-cutting and pivots on other axes such as the total elimination of plastic; efficient water management; the commitment to LED technology (in the last edition, 80% energy savings were achieved); the tree planting (more than 600 in the camping area in the last few years); the progressive reduction in the use of paperand the sustainable mobility (with bus and bicycle rental services for the public).

In addition, since the first edition, the marketing, purchase and consumption of local products has been promoted in all areas and sectors of the festival, from food to logistics. On the one hand, the camping area offers users a wide range of zero kilometer products and items every year. On the other hand, the procurement of proximity products is advocated in areas such as logistics. When purchasing construction materials, lighting, wiring or furniture, among others, we use local suppliers -which already account for 80% of the total- so that the investment reverts to companies in the province and the Valencian Community.
