Sonjah Stanley Niaah is Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of West Indies in Kingston and was the first to win the Rhodes Trust Rex Nettleford Fellowship in the field of Cultural Studies in 2005. His academic research has covered dance, rituals, sacred and popular culture and the connections of all these areas with the historical and sociological aspects of Jamaican dancehall.

His 'Dancehall: From Slave Ship to Ghetto', published in 2010, is one of the most authoritative studies on dancehall culture linked to the experience of the African diaspora. Sonjah also published the compilation of essays 'I'm Broader than Broadway: Caribbean Perspectives on Producing Celebrity'. Geography and psychology are also among the interests of this very skilled researcher who is able to move transversely between several different subject areas.
