During his career, Matisyahu has has given fans much to talk about with his musical style, which incorporates rock and hip hop into a reggae base that supports his lyrics inspired by Hasidic Judaism, of which he was an ardent follower. His real name is Matthew Paul Miller.
After an adolescence marked by rebellion and excess he found refuge in his Jewish identity and at the same time began writing songs, based in hip hop, and moving into reggae. In the late nineties he joined the Jewish reggae band Pey Dalid, an experience that was very important in his development.
His breakthrough as a solo artist came in 2005 with the live album "Live at Stubb's", a work that was followed by "Youth", in which he collaborated with the great experimenter Bill Laswell. Both albums neared the top of the Billboard reggae charts and both were gold records. In 2006 he collaborated with Sly & Robbie on the EP "The Sly & Robbie Sessions".
In late 2011 he cut his beard, which symbolised a relative step away from orthodox Judaisim for Matisyahu and his new work, "Akeda" represents a breakthrough in its simplicity when compared to the sound of the previous albums.
