This year we bring music to the FiSahara International Film Festival, to be held in the refugee camp of Dajla (Algeria) 28 April to 3 May. To be precise, we are sponsoring the participation of Yslem “Son of the Desert”, one of the best known Sahrawi rappers.
On the one hand, the artist will be in charge of closing the XII edition of the film festival with a special concert among the dunes of the desert that will be held on the night of Saturday May 2. Furthermore, Yslem will record a video clip and give a rap composing workshop catering specially for young Sahrawi in order to give them the opportunity to create a special piece of hip hop inspired by the theme of the FiSahara, that this year has the slogan of Universal Justice. With this workshop the young people will learn how to use music as a cultural tool to channel new forms of expression.
The victims of forced disappearances and other crimes against humanity are some of the issues that will be dealt with in the next edition of FiSahara, that unites thousands of Sahrawis hundreds of international visitors, including important actors such as Viggo Mortensen, Ariadna Gil, Oona Chaplin or Pepe Viyuela, together with the co-founder of and president of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, Nora de Cortiñas. To, apart from talking about films, learn about Sahrawi culture and to debate about justice, freedom and human rights.
Indeed, the delicate situation in which the Sahrawi people find themselves was one of the issues dealt with in the Social Forum during the past edition of Rototom Sunsplash, with the debate titled “The Sahara, freedom silenced”.
