Theatre as a test platform for social transformation and for restoring dialogue among human beings. These are two of the guiding principles for the Theatre of the Oppressed, an artistic and pedagogical exercise with ethics and solidarity as its base. A different way of doing and understanding, this modality of the scenic arts joins the programme for the twenty second edition of Rototom Sunsplash.
It does so with two artistic propositions from the company from Vila Real Cultura Crítica (Critical Culture). The first, “a-Dona’t”, is a theatre forum that has gender violence as its central theme, will take place on Wednesday August 19 from 19:00 to 20:30 in the Living Energy area facilitated by the Laboratori de Dones (Women’s Laboratory) of Cultura Crítica.
The performance is one of the actions to be presented in this edition of the festival that aims to raise awareness about the social problem of gender violence and will take place just after the Social Forum dedicates one of its debates on August 19 to this issue: “Love us without violence”.
The objective of the theatre forum is to demonstrate a very real problem on stage and invite the public to become involved as ‘spect-actors’, by proposing alternatives to the conflict in question, with “a-Dona’t” what is looked at are the phases that lead to abuse, in order to find a collective solution to the issue.
“Diálogos desde el cuerpo” (Dialogues from the body) is the second artistic proposal to be offered by the company from Vila Real on Tuesday August 18. In this image theatre, Cultura Crítica will create a space for collective connection in order to communicate bodily “where we do without the manipulation of words to express ourselves physically, materializing ideas and where you can feel that which is abstract”, according to the members of the group.
