“Create alternatives through occupation and perserverance in the face of obstacles”, was the message of Katerina Sergidou, cofounder of Syriza (who she left in 2015) and a member of Unidad Popular; who as part of her time with the Rototom Sunsplash Social Forum, gave her analysis of the situation in Greece, in the debate Qué Europa, qué alternativas. A session which was less about abandoning Europe than finding suitable alternatives: “The people are questionning their governments and that of the European Union”, Katerina affirmed.
Several distinct alternatives were brought to the table, the very same ones which motivated the people of Greece to mobilise against the demands of the European Union, under which they were drowning. There was a shared desire for reform, with people wanting their demands to be listened to, resulting in a change from the current norm through a democratic process: “We are Europe. We are the alternative!”. She was joined by Miguel Urbán, MEP for Podemos, who has done a very thorough analysis of all the similar proceses which have been developing in different countires across Europe: “We will not stop being born. We will not stop dying.”, said Urbán.
Katerina and Urbán were not the only speakers at the Social Forum which opened its doors yesterday, under the lemma of Liberty & Dignity. Earlier on, Dr. Riad Lakkis considered the situation in Syria, in detail from a specialist´s perspective in Cinco años de guerra en Siria: Origen y consecuencias giving a comprehensive outline of the current reality which is affecting many people. His call for assistance for those affected was echoed by Intermon Oxfan, who accompanied him during the debate. He also spoke about the fragility of the situation in Syria, in particular the conflicts and attacks which have resulted in fatalities, despair and fanaticism and in some cases been viewed through the distorting glasses of ignorance. “The generosity of the European public is extraordinary, the ineptitude of politicians is infinite”, said Riad Lakkis.
