The didactic programme includes all areas of musical production, from composition, through song, recording and mixing. This will ensure that the artists end up being able to control the basics of each phase of the standard musical production process.
Four Workshops that you can see via Streaming
On Thursday at 17:00 the residents of the academy will have the opportunity to have master singing class, where they will try out the different vocal styles, receive advice as to how use vocals and tricks to improve vocals. Sr. Wilson is one of the most vocally versatile artists on the scene today, with two records to his name and a third on the way, without coubt he is one of the most reputable names on the Spanish reggae/rub a Dub.
On Friday at 19:00 it will be Chalart58 who provides some theoretical and practical advice on production, how to control and coordinate a crew and equipment. Without doubt Charlat58 is the ideal person for this masterclass. He is one of the most reputable producers, arrangers and engineers in Spain. His studio in La Panchita Records is responsible for some of the best productions released recently, for example the latest album by Adala, Sr Wilson and Alex Bass.
Rico from OBF will continue with the music recording process on Monday at 16:00. Rico is a member of the OBF sound system from France, perhaps one of the most important producers and sound systems in Europe. They are the geniuses behind Sixteen Tons of Pressure by Charlie P, as well as the celebrated Wild con Wilson, YT, Mr.Williamz… they are specialists at mixing roots rock reggae with Digital.
Rico is the perfect person to present the track recording process. The Main Course will be served up by Mad Professor with his Masterclass on live mixing and the managing of a record label. One of the global Dub alchemists and director of the famous Ariwa label offers a unique and unrepeatable opportunity to learn from him first-hand. An authentic legend of our music will be with the Smoking Dub participants on Tuesday at 16:00.
The participants
Participating in the academy will be the musicians, producers and dubbers Johann Hincapié, Danny Trees, Makka Dubba and Pablo Dread, chosen by popular vote (the most democratic way possible) joining them will be the only woman chosen Irie Nanara, resident in San Sebastian. She is a singer that has caught people’s attention in the last year and has just released her first album. You could say that she is the only real rookie to join the group staying at the academy.
Launch pad for new talent
Smoking Dub Academy is the first platform designed to promote the development of new talent from the European dub scene. It is a unique initiative: a musical laboratory that unites some of the most prestigious international professionals with young artists from different fields in a space where their creativity and capacities will be combined to produce unique material. The objective is to develop the profile of these new talents, in order to help them advance in their musical careers.
A musical laboratory followed by five events
The space where they will live is completely equipped to produce and record music, content which will be broadcast via streaming each day. Once the formative phase is finished, the Academy will officially present the material created on March 15 in the Caníbal sessions at the Sala Apolo. The presentation will be the first of many, as audiences will be able to enjoy the work of the Smoking Dub Academy on other key dates: International Dub Gathering, Lagata Reggae and Rototom Sunsplash, three of the most important events on the European reggae scene. Furthemore there will be a show in Madrid, details of which will be announced soon. As we said, the second part of the project is about to begin and the truth is that the results of this initiative promise to be exciting.
