Thanks to our efforts to reduce the number of plastic bottles in each edition, finally we have managed to eliminate them completely from the venue, avoiding the dumping of thousands of them in the waste. We have also eliminated the use of disposable plastic glasses has been eliminated completely in all the bars, where they have been substituted by reusable glasses than can be obtained by leaving a deposit. In recent years we have extended the use of bio-compostable plates and cutlery, made out of biodegradable materials such as sugar cane, corn starch or wood, to all of the catering services at the festival. The recycling of the plates and cutlery together with the organic waste allow them to be reused to make compost.

A cigarette butt takes between one and ten years to decompose. To avoid this and to help festival goers collaborate in keeping the festival clean the Rototom will install 40 containers in the festival venue and the campsite.

We have also extended the vegetation coverage in the venue by planting more than 300 trees in the campsite areas, so as to provide more shade and help reduce CO2 emissions to increase the shade in the campsite.

Since 2014 all the stages at the festival are illuminated with LED technology, which allows us to reduce their electricity consumption by more than a third. We have also gradually introduced this technology in the rest of the festival spaces, which has allowed us to reduce the daily energy consumption of the festival by more than 80%. The festival’s merchandise stores work with solar panels, with which they supply themselves with electricity. The backstage and hospitality area have umbrellas equipped with solar panels that allow mobile phones and tablets to be recharged, as well as providing illumination at night.

We are continuously increasing the number of waste disposal containers to allow for the separation of waste and paper in the venue as well as in the restaurants and the campsite. Over 500 containers of different for waste separation at origin throughout the venue to ensure that every area is covered.

Sustainable mobility is one of our principles. We therefore promote the use of public or collective transport for getting to the festival venue. Each year we offer a bicycle rental facility so that you can get around in a comfortable and environmentally friendly manner.

In 2013 we bet on the reuse of water with the installation of two tanks to reuse, after filtering, the water from the shower drain to fill the cisterns of the toilets. In 2019 we expanded this water recycling system to the camping sinks.

Over the last few years we have gradually reduced the use of paper and other materials in our communications. The edition of publicity material in collaboration with companies that organize concerts and events has meant that we can reduce the number of flyers printed for publicity exponentially. We use recycled paper for both photocopies and printing.

We introduce different barter points in the campsite so that festival goers can exchange, give away or lend things or food and avoid that what we no longer need ends up in the trash.

We promote corporate social responsibility actions and We dedicate part of our benefits to social projects and collaborations with NGOs from different parts of the planet. Do you know how much food is thrown away in a year? In Spain alone, Spanish households dump 1.5 million tons of food valid for consumption every year. A waste that cannot be accepted. Therefore, this year we have started a collaboration with the Castellón Food Bank. How? Inviting restaurants and the public on the last day of the festival to donate the surplus food and then redistribute it free of charge, through the charities associated with the Bank, to the people without resources throughout the province.
