Esteban Ibarra, president of the Movement against Intolerance, and the journalist Miquel Ramos, will discuss the phenomenon of hate crimes against difference in the Social Forum
The Rototom Sunsplash Social Forum turns its attention, 18 August, to the USA and the UK in the debate Hate crimes: against forgetting (17:00). That is where the most recent incidents of ‘hate crimes’ have occurred, be they racial, for LGTB phobia or for ideological motives. The crimes against homosexuals in Orlando, against Afro Americans in several cities in the United States, the murder of the English MP Jo Cox… They are some examples, but they are not the only ones.
In Spain, different NGO, sociologists and specialists on violence have presented the Hate crimes project, an initiative that geographically registers 88 racist assassinations in the last 25 years. This map pretends to raise public awareness regarding these attacks “against difference” and be a shout out against institutional silence. Against forgetting.
To analyse the situation the Rototom Sunsplash welcome to the Social Forum, Esteban Ibarra, president of the Movement against Intolerance, and Miquel Ramos, journalist and activist for different internationalist, anti-racist and human rights social movements.
